One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest; Ken Kesey.

Ken Kesey passed away yesterday (11/10/01). It has been several years since my last reading of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Perhaps it would be a good time to read again the battle of minds between McMurphy and the Big Nurse.

If you have yet to read this work, then I envy you. Kesey has a truly unique writing style, and has extremely piercing views into the minds of his characters. I you have read the book, then I am sure you agree it is one of the few books worth a second reading.

All The Kings Men; Robert Penn Warren, pages 438.

No, this is not an account of the Clinton administration. All The King's Men is a fictional account of a southern politician by the name of Willie Stark who leads a political career paralleling Huey Long.

Stark bursts into the political scene with luck and a short spark of idealism. His down to earth style has a strong appeal to the common man. Yet, he is soon an integral part of the political machine, and he becomes more brash, corrupt and dictatorial in his dealings.

We see this evolution of a monster through the eyes of the morally ambivilant Jack Burden...a reporter and sometimes hatchet man for the Governor.

Robert Penn Warren, who became the first poet laureat of the United States, has a clean and enjoyable style. His works explore human and moral dimensions of the subject. All The Kings Men stands as one of the most important classics in American literature.

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre; B. Traven.

It is impossible to read this book without seeing Humphrey Bogart playing the role of Frederick C. Dobbs...a miner set forth to make his fortune Mexico's Sierra Madre, only to find his dreams eroded by his own suspicions and avarice.

The book is as much a classic as the 1948 movie. It is an enthralling tale of life in wilderness, and revealing portrayal of man. It is a book that is both entertaining and thought provoking.

The Milagro County Beanfield War; John Nicols.

The Milagro County Beanfield War is a piece of pure magic. In this work, John Nicols creates a delightful New Mexican community that must fight the powers that be to survive.

After reading the book, you definitely will want to rent the movie directed by Robert Redford. Although the movie was not a box office success, it features some of the best cinematography of the time, and is as delightful as the book. It is one of the few movies that I would enjoy watching multiple times.
